Frequently Asked Questions.
Yes. We live in a broken world and we all have areas of our lives that require healing and growth. Whether you’re looking to reduce distressing symptoms related to a mental illness, improve your quality of life by enhancing your well-being and relationships, or simply need help getting over an unexpected life hurdle, working with a therapist provides the relational support to foster new insight, increase self-awareness, and develop strategies to get the most out of life. People are wounded in relationship, but they are healed in relationship.
Confidentiality is the cornerstone of trust and one of the most important components of the therapeutic relationship. I consider your story, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, relationships, and behaviors as sacred and whatever you decide to share during sessions is completely up to you. You can be sure that during sessions and outside of sessions, I have taken every precaution to safeguard your personal information.
Prior to our first session, you will be given the opportunity to review and sign the Informed Consent Agreement. This agreement clarifies how information is shared and kept confidential. However, it should be noted that there are a few exceptions to the limitations of confidentiality:
• If I believe you pose a substantial risk of hurting yourself or others, I may breach confidentiality to protect you or anyone who may potentially be at risk.
• If I become aware or suspect child or elder abuse in any form, the law requires that I break confidentiality to report any relevant information to the proper authorities.
• If I am subpoenaed for court, I may be required to disclose confidential information. However, every effort will be made to uphold and protect your rights and you will be notified of the subpoena prior to any disclosure.
For the most part, we will discuss whatever is on your mind. As a person-centered therapist, I want my clients to take ownership of their goals and growth. This means that frequently, you will be setting the agenda for what we will be talking about. My job is to listen intently and be a non-judgmental sounding board that helps you see and experience the beauty and brokenness of your humanity. Occasionally, I will ask questions or make observations that are designed to help us both better understand you and your unique story. Also, because I can’t help myself, sometimes I may throw in some corny jokes. Most people just roll their eyes and we move on.
Unfortunately, I do not accept insurance. This may change in the future, but for now, I feel that the drawbacks of bringing an insurance company into the therapeutic relationship outweigh the benefits. Specifically, insurance companies focus on medical outcomes, often unnecessarily requiring a label that permanently diagnoses individuals. Additionally, most insurance companies do not value or recognize the significance of marital satisfaction or relational wellness.
I am committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards, allowing you to keep your medical records private from any insurance companies or employers interested in your mental health history. By simply paying in full as needed, you maintain complete control and confidentiality of your sessions.
I know this may be frustrating given the fact that counseling can be quite expensive. I’ve made every effort to keep my rates reasonable and in certain situations, I do offer a sliding scale based on the client’s ability to pay. Also, I do accept HAS and FSA cards as payment for sessions.
